Collaboration Aims to Promote Indigenous Healthcare Innovation
The National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), a Government of India enterprise dedicated to promoting indigenous technologies, has announced a strategic partnership with SS Medical Systems India Pvt. Ltd. to facilitate the nationwide deployment of microwave-based infection control technology across government healthcare facilities.
The innovative technology was developed by the Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER), an autonomous research and development institution operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India.
Bridging Research and Healthcare Implementation
Speaking on the collaboration, Amit Rastogi, Chairman and Managing Director of NRDC, emphasized the organization’s mission to translate laboratory innovations into real-world solutions.
“NRDC’s mandate is to take innovative technologies from laboratories to the marketplace for the benefit of society. Through our partnership with SS Medical Systems, we aim to accelerate the adoption of advanced infection control solutions across healthcare institutions and support India’s efforts to build a safer and more resilient healthcare infrastructure,” he said.
Nationwide Deployment of Infection Control Systems
Under the agreement, NRDC will promote and commercialize SS Medical Systems’ mobile microwave-based infection control units through its extensive pan-India network. These systems are designed to sterilize infectious biomedical waste efficiently, helping hospitals strengthen infection prevention practices while maintaining environmentally sustainable waste management.
Monish Bhandari, CMD of SS Medical Systems India Pvt. Ltd., highlighted the potential impact of the technology on healthcare safety.
“Our microwave-based infection control system provides an efficient and sustainable method for managing infectious biomedical waste and reducing hospital-acquired infections. With NRDC’s nationwide network and expertise in technology commercialization, we believe this solution can significantly enhance patient safety and hospital hygiene standards across India,” he stated.
Enhancing Biomedical Waste Management and Infection Control
Technologies developed by SAMEER are designed to address critical national challenges using advanced engineering solutions. The deployment of microwave-based infection control systems is expected to significantly improve biomedical waste treatment and strengthen infection prevention practices within healthcare facilities.
The technology could also help reduce the incidence of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), lower antimicrobial resistance risks, and improve hospital bed availability by enhancing infection management. These outcomes are expected to contribute to stronger and more efficient healthcare infrastructure across public health institutions.
NRDC’s Role in Technology Commercialization
According to the press release, NRDC functions as a Public Sector Undertaking under the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India. The organization plays a crucial role in connecting research institutions with industry partners by facilitating technology transfer, licensing, and commercialization of scientific innovations.
Supporting India’s Healthcare Innovation Ecosystem
Overall, the partnership between NRDC and SS Medical Systems represents an important step toward strengthening India’s healthcare innovation ecosystem. It also aligns with the country’s broader vision of building a self-reliant and resilient public health system through the adoption of indigenous technological solutions.
